Worked example: “raises 16”
Synthetic six-handed NLHE cash hand; amounts in chips. Blinds 1/2, no antes, straddles or deductions. BTN/SB/BB start with 200/300/260 before posting. Others fold without contributing. BTN raises to 6, SB folds, BB calls. Flop K♠ 7♦ 2♣: BB checks, BTN bets 4, BB note says “raises 16.” BTN has not responded.
Preflop pot: 6 + 1 + 6 = 13. These are two interpretations of a written note, not a live declaration ruling.

SB retains 299. Both totals reconcile: 33 + 190 + 238 + 299 = 760 and 37 + 190 + 234 + 299 = 760. Arithmetic cannot choose the remembered action. “Raise to” removes wording ambiguity; accuracy still depends on its source.
Worked example: turn suit unknown
Separate synthetic hand: Hero A♠ Q♦; flop K♠ 9♠ 4♦; turn is a two with unknown suit. If 2♠, a spade river completes Hero’s ace-high flush. If 2♥, one river cannot complete Hero’s flush. These are hypothetical alternatives, not equally likely claims or action advice.
Before choosing a study setup
Verify from a permitted reliable record; log the correction. Branch into justified alternatives without treating either as observed. Narrow or pause if a missing fact prevents the intended comparison. Known current chips can support a current-state question even if starting stacks are unknown.
