If you are learning no-limit Texas Hold’em and do not know what to study next, sample five narrow checkpoints. They cover a showdown comparison, Button-versus-big-blind postflop order, one pot-odds denominator, one card-removal count, and one optional solver-output interpretation.

The router suggests the topic attached to the earliest missed checkpoint among these five. That sequence is an editorial study heuristic, not a validated hierarchy or a complete map of poker skill. A miss is a prompt to check the related topic; it is not proof that you lack the whole topic. How a Narrow Miss Becomes a Review Route

The first answer marked incorrect or “Not sure” selects a related review topic. Passing a checkpoint means only that you answered one item correctly. Use the suggestion as a first experiment—not as a permanent label or evidence of mastery.

The route is based on the earliest miss in this editorial sequence, not the number of correct answers. Someone who answers checkpoints two through five correctly but misreads the showdown receives the hand-reading review. That is a conservative study suggestion, not a claim that the person cannot understand later concepts.

What These Five Checkpoints Cover

Poker knowledge is not perfectly linear. A tournament specialist can understand ICM while still making combo-counting mistakes; a strong live player can read action well without using solver vocabulary. We placed concrete reading and arithmetic before more abstract model output because that makes a usable study sequence. It is one defensible editorial order, not a universal dependency chain. Solver literacy is optional, not a prerequisite for applied poker practice.

1. Read the hand before choosing a strategy

Hand rankings are only the beginning. You must consistently select the highest-ranking five cards, recognize shared-board ties, and compare kickers. If that process is slow, strategy feedback becomes noisy: the learner may “fix” a bet that was never the main mistake.

Start with our poker hand rankings guide. Then make the knowledge executable. Deal ten boards, assign two hands, and say the exact winner and five-card holding before revealing the answer. Do not move on because the chart looks familiar; move on when the comparison itself is reliable.

2. Put every decision in seat order

Seat position and the preceding action tell you who has acted, who still can act, and which starting ranges are plausible. Preflop charts without seat names are just colored squares. Postflop advice without action order loses the informational advantage that position creates.

A useful micro-drill is to draw a six-handed table and mark the first scheduled actor preflop, the first actor after the flop, and the Button. Rotate the Button and repeat. Then add one raise and trace the action until no unmatched wager remains. 3. Separate price from probability

Pot odds answer one question: how often must a call recover its cost in a simplified showdown model? Equity answers another: how much of the pot does a hand or range expect to win at showdown? Comparing them is powerful only when both quantities use compatible assumptions.

For a call of C into a pot that will be F after you call, the no-future-action threshold is C / F. The router’s 50-chip call contests a final 200-chip pot, so the threshold is 25%. Rake or future action changes the final cash flows; multiway pots, ties, ranges, and imperfect estimates complicate the expected share of the pot. 4. Replace one hand with a set of possible hands

A range is not a vague list of “strong hands.” It is a weighted set of specific combinations consistent with the cards and action. Known cards remove combinations. On the router’s A♠ 7♦ 2♣ flop, holding A♥ leaves only A♦ and A♣, so an opponent has one possible AA combination rather than the six available before any ace is seen.

5. Read solver output as a model result

Solver frequencies are strategy frequencies inside a specified game tree. They are not confidence percentages, promises that one action will win, or proof that a tiny displayed EV difference is strategically meaningful after rounding and model error.

If betting shows 2.10 bb and checking 2.09 bb in the same solved state, the most defensible first reading is that the actions are nearly indifferent in that model. Before copying the 60/40 mix, ask which ranges, bet sizes, rake, stack depth, and future actions were allowed. Why There Is No Poker Skill Score

Five multiple-choice responses cannot support a broad claim about poker ability. A guess can pass a gate; a slip can fail one. Each checkpoint samples only a narrow concept, and this router has not been calibrated against a representative learner population or linked to later poker outcomes.

That limitation is why the result is a review prompt. The joint Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing says a test should begin with a defined purpose, intended use, content domain, population, scoring, and reporting plan—and that evidence should support the particular interpretation being made. Our intended interpretation is deliberately small: “this topic corresponds to the earliest miss among five items,” not “this is your poker level.”

The content blueprint is public too. Diagnostic-assessment research calls an item-to-skill map a Q-matrix; a simulation study of Q-matrix design found that item–attribute alignment affects classification quality. We borrow the transparent mapping idea, not the paper's psychometric model. There is one checkpoint per gate here—far too little evidence to claim mastery or classification accuracy.

Why Answering and Feedback Still Help

The questions are not merely decoration. A review by Roediger and Butler reports that retrieving an answer can improve long-term retention relative to repeated study, and that feedback strengthens the benefit. A later meta-analysis of 222 classroom studies involving 48,478 students found a positive average effect of quizzing, with results varying by factors including feedback, format, repetition, timing, and study design.

Those findings support a learning interaction: try, retrieve, receive corrective feedback, and practice again. They do not validate this router's placement accuracy or show that a five-question poker tool improves poker performance. That would require purpose-built learner research.

Turn the Result Into One 30-Minute Study Block

  1. Write the gap in one sentence. “I used the pot before my call as the denominator” is more actionable than “I am bad at math.”
  2. Study one explanation for ten minutes. Use the route's linked guide or another source you trust. Do not open five topics.
  3. Do ten retrievals or decisions. Name winners, mark action order, calculate thresholds, count combos, or explain solver outputs—without notes first.
  4. Review every miss immediately. Record the misconception, not just the correct letter.
  5. Retest later with new examples. One correct repeat can be memory for the item; varied examples are stronger evidence that the concept transfers.

How the Router Was Built and Checked

The routing rule is intentionally inspectable: answer all five questions; take the review topic attached to the earliest answer that is not correct; otherwise take the applied-practice route. “Not sure” is treated as a review signal. No weighted total, hidden threshold, learner profile, account, cookie, or server request is involved.

We publish the complete question and route blueprint (JSON), a compact answer map (CSV), and a Node.js reference checker. The checker enumerates all 4⁵ = 1,024 complete answer combinations and compares the declared JSON routes with the stated earliest-miss rule. Download the three files into one folder and run node poker-learning-router-verifier.mjs.

The checker compares the JSON’s checkpoint IDs, correct-option IDs, and route IDs with a separately declared five-entry oracle, confirms that the CSV matches the JSON, and tests every response combination. It cannot establish that a poker premise or answer key is true, and it does not exercise the React interface. The site’s separate automated tests cover the production routing function and rendered interaction. The next empirical step would be a disclosed beginner pilot measuring item difficulty, misunderstood distractors, route overrides, later drill performance, and retest stability.

  • Five narrow checkpoints: many skills are absent, including live observation, tournament payouts, bankroll decisions, mental game, and game-specific rules.
  • Hold’em scope: the questions use no-limit Texas Hold’em concepts; do not transfer the sequence or answers to another variant without checking that variant’s rules.
  • One item per gate: a correct answer is weak evidence of mastery; an incorrect answer is a useful prompt to review, not a diagnosis.
  • Linear editorial sequence: real knowledge can be patchy. You may know a later concept while missing an earlier one.
  • No outcome validation: the router has not been tested against long-term retention, decision quality, or poker results.
