What Does GTO Preflop Mean?
GTO stands for game theory optimal: a strategy so balanced that no opponent can gain by deviating against it. The idea comes from John Nash's 1950 equilibrium work, and it became concrete for poker when researchers at the University of Alberta essentially solved heads-up limit hold'em in 2015, published in Science. Full no-limit hold'em remains too large to solve exactly, so modern tools compute close approximations of equilibrium play.
Preflop is where those approximations are strongest. The decision tree before the flop is small enough that solvers map it thoroughly: every position, every common raise size, every standard stack depth. When players talk about GTO preflop ranges, they mean these solver outputs, usually displayed as a 13x13 grid of starting hands. Why Start Your GTO Study Preflop?
Because every single hand includes a preflop decision, and later streets appear less and less often. A mistake in your opening ranges repeats hundreds of times per session, and it also poisons everything downstream: if you arrive at the flop with the wrong range, no postflop skill fully repairs the damage.
Preflop is also the only street where near-perfect play is realistic. Postflop trees are enormous, but preflop charts can genuinely be learned. That is why coaches almost universally tell students to fix preflop first, then spend the rest of their study time on postflop work.
The Core Principles Behind Solved Preflop Ranges
1. Position sets your range width
The single biggest factor in a GTO opening range is how many players are left to act. In a standard 100bb 6-max cash game, solver-approved raise-first-in ranges widen from roughly 18% of hands under the gun to 43% on the Button:

2. Raise or fold, with narrow exceptions
Solvers almost never open-limp from any position except the Small Blind. Entering the pot with a raise builds the pot when you have the range advantage, takes initiative, and gives you two ways to win the hand. The Small Blind is the exception because you already have money invested and act first on every later street. In many tournament and Spin configurations, solvers mix Small Blind raises with a real limping range, and at short stacks limping can even dominate.
3. Suitedness matters far more than it looks
Being suited adds only about 3-4% of raw equity, but it transforms playability: flush potential turns marginal hands into profitable opens. That is why A5s appears in every opening range while A8o folds from early position. 4. 3-bets are linear in some seats, polarized in others
When you are in position against a late open, solvers 3-bet a linear range (the best hands, top down). From the blinds, 3-bet ranges polarize: premium hands for value, plus suited wheel aces and similar hands that block continues and play fine when called. 5. Stack depth rewrites the ranges
A 100bb chart is wrong at 30bb, and badly wrong at 15bb. As stacks shorten, implied odds collapse, suited connectors lose value, and high-card strength gains. Which Preflop Mistakes Cost the Most?
- Open-limping outside the Small Blind: It caps your range, invites multiway pots with no initiative, and appears in almost no solver output.
- Cold-calling too much out of position: Solvers mostly 3-bet or fold from the blinds against late opens. Wide flat calls out of position bleed EV all session.
- Over-folding the Big Blind: Against a Small Blind min-raise you should defend around 65-70% of hands, and around 45-50% against a Button open. Most players fold far more, giving up pot odds they already paid for.
- One chart for every format: A 100bb no-ante cash range is not an MTT ante range and not a 25bb Spin range.

Is GTO preflop the same for cash games and tournaments?
No. Cash ranges assume 100bb, rake, and no antes. Tournament ranges shift with antes (wider), shorter stacks (more high-card hands, fewer speculative suited hands), and ICM pressure (tighter calls when pay jumps matter). Always match the chart's format, stack depth, and ante structure to the game you are actually playing.
Should you ever limp preflop?
From the Small Blind, yes: solvers mix raises and limps there in many configurations, especially in tournaments and Spins at shorter stacks. From every other position, solver output is overwhelmingly raise-or-fold. Open-limping elsewhere caps your range and forfeits the initiative that makes wide opens profitable in the first place.
Do I need to memorize exact mixed frequencies?
No. Learn pure actions and stable range boundaries first. When a solver plays a hand 60% raise and 40% fold, the practical lesson is that the hand is close, and either action is fine. Exact frequency matching matters against elite opposition, not in the games most people play.
Can GTO preflop play be exploited?
By definition, a true equilibrium strategy cannot be exploited, only matched. In practice you play an approximation, and opponents are not exploiting your preflop ranges nearly as much as they are punishing obvious errors like over-folding blinds or limping weak hands.
